AUSTIN, TX - FEBRUARY 2023

To highlight the letters of those suffering the torture of solitary confinement in Texas – and to bring something to the capitol while legislators were convening for the 88th Texas Legislative session – a three-screen LED billboard truck was driven around the Texas capital. Exhibiting the raw, first-hand letters of over 20 people in solitary confinement, the truck – much like the project – is an exposé, a public display of a justice system and a state that allows inhumanity and injustice to run rampant.

This gesture urges legislators, and us as a society, to consider the cruelty of isolation at its apex, and how time, when combined with near complete solitude and a severe lack of meaningful educational or rehabilitative opportunities - let alone humane treatment or quality healthcare - becomes torture in its purest form, a type of horrendous infliction not only to be endured but often to be survived.
